Why does it cost so much?

Everything’s expensive.

Some things are easier to get excited
about spending money on than others.
A new TV, dinner out, even gas for the
car can be very entertaining.

But the wastewater bill? That’s no fun!

On the other hand, how many people
would be willing to quit buying that service?
What would you do with your wastewater if the City quit taking it?
Let’s don’t even think about it!

Wastewater bills have increased over the years because the cost of treating the waste has increased. Old equipment and old pipes need to be replaced.
Regulations have gotten stricter. We’ve added more and better technologies
to make sure that the water we send to our neighbors downstream will be as clean as we would want them to send to us.

And the cost of doing business has risen for the Oxford Wastewater Treatment Plant just like it has for the rest of us. In early 2005 the electric bill for the plant was $12,000 per month!

Around the world the pressure is growing to locate clean sources of drinking water and to protect the natural water resources that sustain our health and well being.
Unfortunately, the cost of our drinking water and our wastewater treatment systems will continue to rise.

At the same time, we are all learning to value the excellent water and wastewater services that are the norm here in the United States.

In many parts of the world, people would be amazed at a glass of clear, clean, safe drinking water – something that we take for granted as a part of our everyday life.

Drink up and enjoy!
